Wednesday, March 31, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER One day left to appy for First Connection There is one day left for Grade 12 students to apply for First Connection-- a summer career devel­ opment program funded by the Hilary M. Weston Foundation for Youth. Deadline for applications is mid­ night, Thursday April 1st. Under First Connection, 24 Ontario Grade 12 students will receive training, mentoring and networking opportuni­ ties during two-month summer intern­ ships with some of Ontario's most suc­ cessful companies and organizations. First Connection was initiated last year by the Hilary M. Weston Foundation for Youth. Based on its suc­ cess Lieut. Governor Hilary M. Weston expanded the program from 12 to 24 students this year. The Foundation was created in 1997, as a result of Weston's commitment to donate her annual salary to youth-related programs. First Connection participants will receive a $3,000 bursary, while gaining alongside seasoned executives and younger professionals within the Ontario business community. They will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to succeed in today's highly competitive job market and to make more informed decisions on career prospects and further education. First Connection has three main components: □ Career Development Training: A one-week orientation session in Toronto (week of June 27th) including workshops and skills training sessions, job market briefings and meetings with business community representatives. □ Placement: A two-month sum­ mer internship through July and August working with major businesses and organizations in the participants' com­ munities including Rogers@Home, CIBC, Loblaw Companies Ltd., Bell Canada, Nestle Canada, the Ontario Community Newspapers Association, Council for Aboriginal Business and Ryerson Polytechnic University. □ Sharing Experiences: Parti­ cipants will share their experiences with fellow students and their commu­ nity through speaking at high schools, writing stories for local newspapers and being interviewed by local media. First Connection is open to Grade 12 students across Ontario. To be eligible, students must have excellent communi­ cation skills, satisfactory academic per­ formance and be active in their school or community through volunteer work or other activities. Interested students must submit a one-page essay on how important voluntarism is to Ontario and using two examples, describe how these activities have affected their lives. More tim e for Women o f the Year nom inations The nomination deadline for Hal ton's Second Annual Women of the Year Awards presented by the Women's Information and Support Centre of Halton has been extended to Monday April 12th. The original deadline for nominations was set for the end of this week, "however we decided to give the community more time to nominate poten­ tial recipients," says Mary Koster, director of the Women's Centre, adding several nomina­ tions have already been received. The awards will be presented at a reception and ceremony on Tuesday, May 4th, at the Glen Abbey G olf Club. * "There are many women in Halton whose exemplary ser­ vice to others raises the bar on l e a d e r s h i p , responsiveness, action, persever­ ance, and social awareness," says Koster. "They are our neighbours, rela­ tives and col­ leagues - women who exemplify integrity and determination." Those inter­ ested in nominat­ ing a woman are asked to describe their Halton can­ didate by citing her leadership abilities, chal­ lenges she has met and obsta­ cles she has overcome; how she has made a difference and how she has demonstrated her strength. A per­ sonal profile sheet should also accompany the form. N o m i n a t i o n forms are avail­ able at the Women's Info­ rmation and Support Centre located at Hopedale Mall, Suite 210, and by calling The Women's Centre at 847-5520. They may also be obtained from public libraries and businesses in Halton display­ ing the Women of the Year Awards poster. "At our inau­ gural ceremony, we presented the awards to four o u t s t a n d i n g women from over 30 deserv­ ing Halton nomi­ nees. We are a n t i c i p a t i n g drawing even more candidates this year," states Koster. The organiz­ ing committee is expecting a repeat sell-out audience. Tickets are $25 and may be obtained by calling The Women's Centre. Proceeds from the event are designated to support the work of the Women's Inform ation and Support Centre of Halton - a regis­ tered charitable organiza­ tion. The W omen's Centre, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is pleased that The Honourable Hilary M. Weston, Lieutenant Governor o f Ontario has accepted an invitation to speak at the ceremony. "The Lieutenant Governor is a staunch sup­ porter of women's causes," says Koster. "We're very pleased she's able to attend. We're looking forward to introducing some of Halton's most successful women to Her Honour."
