McCusker Don't discount need for disability insurance Financially you're in great shape. At least you think you are. On the surface, you are a model for others to follow. You know that when you stop work ing, your income will stop, so years ago, you started contributing to a RRSP on a monthly basis. Give yourself credit for that. Recently those savings were changed to a spousal RRSP plan, therefore income taxes during retirement will be reduced. An article on the escalating cost of a uni versity education motivated you to start a RESP savings plan that will assist with your objective to help the kids with the cost of a post-secondary education. Decisions that were made concerning the house mortgage 10 years ago proved success ful and so you will be debt-free very soon. The more you think about everything that has been done correctly, the happier you feel. Although you have not mentioned it to your spouse, you want to write a book for others to learn from your expertise. The theme would be based on the common sense approach of saving during the working years so you can spend when retirement starts. It's a simple matter of redirecting today's cash flow to tomorrow's financial requirements. Then one day, without warning, your income stops-you become disabled. The statistics are not so optimistic. For a 50-year-old male, there is a 3 in 10 chance that he will become disabled for more than 90 days. Becoming disabled for women is only a 1 in 10 risk. The average disability period lasts 3.1 years. You do the math. What would happen to your retirement nest egg if your income were interrupted for several years? So it is back to the drawing board. Rethink your plans to retire. Yes, retirement planning is based on saving now to spend later. The assumption that your regular income will continue is not good PETER WATSON Dollars & Sense enough. Insurance is needed to cover the financial risk of losing the regular employment income. Many people do have life insurance but need to verify if they have disability insurance and if it is adequate. Many disability policies are excellent and many are not. It is best to be aware of the type of coverage you have and whether more is needed to insure you meet your long-term financial goals. H am ilton h o sp itals go h igh-tech UNIS LUMIN Inc. of Oakville has just completed the integration of one of the fastest high-spped wide area networks in Canada at the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation (HHSC). The HHSC was created from the merger of four Hamilton hospitals and is the province's largest provider of comprehensive healthcare services, serving almost two million people. The challenge facing HHSC was was to develop a wide area connection between each hospital's existing network, providing users with a seamless, high-quality service to accommodate more users, applications and locations. UNIS LUMIN proved the design for a redundant site-to-site connection solution and partnered with Mark Osborne, HHSC Co-ordi- nator of Network Administration and his team to use Hamilton Hydro fibre optic facilities instead of traditional telephone company ser vices. The solution gained the hospital access to almost-unlimited bandwidth to run voice, video and data between sites for a fraction of the cost compared with telephone lines. The result is a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure that consolidates all its business applications into a single system with a uni form look and feel. New applications can be deployed quickly and efficiently and patient records can be accessed from anywhere within the corporation.
