f - Boaters anxious to m ake w aves th is spring Claudia D'Souza SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Oakville's rich boaring heritage is a tribute to its waterfront communities and with the smell of spring in the air, the harbour areas are gearing up for another busy recreation al boating season. Local boating clubs and organiza tions work together with marinas to provide the public with plenty of learn ing opportunities and boating fun. Mooring slips can be rented seasonally and electricity, water, winter storage, haul-out services, public launching ramps and overnight mooring are avail able for a small percentage of visiting or transient boats. The Oakville Harbours Development Authority, created in 1973, is charged with recommending policies for the redevelopment of its harbours and surrounding parks. Oakville's two harbours, in Bronte and downtown Oakville, accommodate hundreds of sail (60% its business) and power boaters (40%) every season. The trend is towards power boating and the installation of more finger docks is being investigated, as is the need for more transient slips. The mooring sea son is May lst-Oct. 31st. Each harbour is separate and distinct with qualities and activities unique to them. Oakville Harbour is a natural, serene and rustic harbour enjoyed by boaters and non-boaters alike. It provides accommodations and services for boaters while remaining open and accessible for the public to enjoy. In addition to the slips operated by the Oakville Harbours Development Authority, Bronte Harbour has the pri vately-run Bronte Outer Harbour Marina. The Bronte Outer Harbour Marina is the newest marina on Lake Ontario. It started with 75 slips in May 1998 and is currently undergoing develop ment by the Region of Halton. "We have in excess of 200 slips now (about 10% are kept open for transient boaters for boats up to 90 feet long) and new fuel docks installed this year," said Bill Miller, marina general manag er and Bronte Harbour Yacht Club member. "We get about 800-1,000 transient boaters each year who often find us by accident. Our eventual plan is to have 450 slips." Existing amenities include a state- of-the-art floating dock with non marking rubber comers, a 74 sq.-m (800 sq.-ft.), covered picnic area, dock security, security card access, showers, washrooms and laundry facilities. This fall, construction begins on an expan sion that will turn it into a full service marina complete with restaurant, ships' chandlery/store, patio and ban quet facilities for 250. "It's going to be impressive," said Miller. "The federal government decid ed to privatize the marina four years ago. At the end of the day, four or five years from now, $14 million will be injected into the project." The marina re-opens for transient and seasonal boaters May 15th. Its newsletter, Making Waves, is pub lished regularly. Call 827-7575 for more information or visit its Web site at www.bronte-marina.com. Hie Bronte Harbour Yacht Club offers sailing lessons for youth, chil dren and a unique program/regatta for the visually impaired held each June from the marina. "It's an amazing program that's been running for 22 years," said coor dinator Liz Mather. "The boats are manned by two sighted crew. It runs from June 14-18 this year. There is a waiting list and it costs $20 for a week cumulating in a regatta June 17." Call 827-6437 for more informa tion. There are approximately 325 slips in Oakville Harbour. Holding tank pump-outs are open on Saturdays and Thursday evenings during the sailing season. The Burloak Canoe Club offers year-round and seasonal programs from Oakville Harbour to suit all ages.
