The presentation was made by the tourney director and a Halifax city councilor. The Fastfrate Eagles peewee house league hockey team capped off an outstanding season this past weekend, winning their final tournament of the year. And they had to go a ways to do it -- namely, Halifax. Fastfrate, a red level house league team in Oakville's Minor Oaks Hockey Association, topped 30 rep teams from eastern Canada to win the peewee A championship. The international tournament was sponsored by the South East Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association. In the championship game, James Lynch scored two minutes into sudden death overtime to give his team the 3- 2 win over the hometown Dartmouth Whalers. Twice, Fastfrate had taken one-goal leads only to see the stubborn Dartmouth team even the score. Oakville blazed to a 4-1 record in the preliminary round, defeating East Hants 3-1, West Hants 4-0, Lunenburg 7-3 and Kentville 4-1. Their only loss was to Bedford, Nova Scotia in a heartbreaking 2-1 decision after leading 1-0 going into the final frame. Fastfrate couldn't have picked a better time to avenge that loss, defeating Bedford 3-0 in the semifinals. The championship was a total team effort from the solid goaltending of Doug Csima and stingy defence which allowed only eight goals throughout the tournament to their (See 'Fastfrate' page On the run At almost any road race you will find a few runners prominently standing on the start line in their matching run ning apparel -- shoes, shorts, sweatband, socks and singlet -- all supplied by the major brand-name manufacturers. These runners are the elite of the running community, the ones whose finishing times make most runners feel like walkers. Unfortunately, once the race is over, very few win ners stay longer than it takes to accept a cheque and/or tro phy. But the average runner the world over, after securing his medal and free race T-shirt, loves to hang around and gab. In fact, for many of these runners, the opportunity to talk running is part of any race day event. The Running Company wondered if a program of spon sorship tailored to benefit and acknowledge these average (See 'Ambassador' page 27) The Running Company has a unique sponsorship pro gram. Antoinettes will be well represented at provincials which they are hosting M ay 7-9th at Glen Abbey Rec Centre The Oakville Gymnastics Center, home of the Antoinettes competitive gym team, will do more than host the prestigious youth provincials. They'll also have a huge contin gent competing, as well. The Antoinettes were successful in their bid to host this year's youth provincials and it will be held May 7-9th at Glen Abbey Rec Centre. The meet features the top gym nasts in the province between the ages of nine and 12. A companion meet, called Elite Ontario, is held for girls 13 and over, and it runs April 24/25th in Cambridge. Berths in these provincial cham pionships must be earned through regional qualifying meets, of which there were three in the Central Regional, of which Oakville is a part of. Gymnasts can take their best results from two of the meets with, typically, the top six, over all, in the various divisions earning berths in the provincials. The three central region meets have now all been completed, and when the dust had settled the Antoinettes had qualified 15 com petitors outright to their respective provincial championships as well as four alternates. Included is a list of the Antoinettes competitors who have earned a berth in their respective provincials and their category (the higher the number, the higher the skill level). Also included, are the results of the third central qualifier. Having been chosen to host this year's youth provincial champi onships, the club is actively seeking corporate and public support. There are many ways to become involved. Corporate sponsorships are avail able at a variety of levels. There is also a need for other donations such as T-shirts for staff and athletes, memorabilia for ath letes, food and beverages for con cession sales and hospitality room, decorations and other appropriate products. To become part of the exciting provincial championships, which are expected to attract upwards of 400 elite young gymnasts from all of Ontario's seven regions, including a sizeable contingent from host Oakville, contact Antoinettes G.M.
