The two finalists played each o th e r once d u rin g th e r e g u la r season and it turned out to be the game that decided both first place in the V olpe d iv is io n and w ho would get the undefeated record. The honors w en t to M ilto n , who won handily 9-2. They went on to f in ish the seaso n w ith a, perfect six wins while Blakelock had to pencil in a loss to go with their other five wins. "W e d id n 't p lay very w e ll," recalled B lakelock coach N igel Scott. He said it was an off-day all around -- h ittin g , fie ld ing and pitching. T his tim e around , he added, "we have to play better baseball." They're certainly coming off a good game. C o ry P ik e p itc h e d fo u r scoreless innings and he was ably relieved by A1 M cNish who was able to put out a small brush fire in the final inning after Aldershot had finally pushed through a run. The same scenario, with Pike s ta r t in g an d M cN ish read y to accept the torch, will repeat itself on Monday, said coach Scott. Blakelock "chipped away" for both of their runs, one in the third and one in the fifth. In the third inning, Jason Lee singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground-out and made it home on Scott Brown's single. The w inning run in the fifth inning was similar: Lee singled, stole second, secured third on a p a sse d b a ll and m ade it hom e w hen John M itobe was able to beat out a two-out swinging bunt to first base. Oakville Trafalgar has a devil of a time against Brantford Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils coach Greg Sora really thought his team would snap back against Brantford in T hursday 's q uarterfina l gam e at the p rov inc ia l rugby championships. U nder constan t p ressu re in the firs t half, his team managed to keep Brantford out o f the end zone, limiting them to just three points as they were successful on only one o f four penalty kicks. "We bent but we didn't break," said Coach Sora. They failed to capitalize on Brantford's missed chances, however, and went on to lose 16-3. Brantford went on to win its semifinal game 21-0 over Father Bressani (W oodbridge) and met up with Barrie Central in Friday's provincial championship. 'Penalties -- we took too many," said Sora. "And we've never played a game so undisciplined." He thought the straw that broke the camel's back was a superb three-point penalty kick by Brantford from midfield that gave them a comfortable 9-0 lead. "It just kept going and going and going. It made it over the crossbar by about one foot -- and then fell straight down. You could just see the players' faces drop." They did manage to close the gap with their own three- point penalty boot, but Brantford salted the game away, fina lly scoring a try (w hich they converted) on good counter attack. Already looking to next year, coach Sora called it a "good learning experience" for the Red Devils which won their 25th straight league playoff championship this year (See 'next year' page 18) Tuesday Dinner Special 01994 McDonald's Restaurants ot Canada Limited Offer valid at 375 Iroquois Shore Rd. ♦ ♦ ♦ - O akville B eaver W eekend, S unday, June 4, 1995
