Wednesday, April 14, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C 7 HOME & GARDEN Clean-up began in 1992 beneath QEW overpass at Bronte Creek (Continued from page C8) □ Sheridan College - meet at back parking lot of college for clean-up of Sixteen Mile Creek □ GO Station - meet at Cross and Speers for clean-up of Sixteen Mile Creek. □ Downtown Lakeffont - meet at Lakeside Park on Navy Street. □ Iroquois Ridge - meet at Glenashton Drive bridge between Trafalgar and Eighth Line □ Wildflower Woods - join Ford employees at Ford Drive and Sheridan Garden Drive □ Clearview - meet at the back of St. Luke School □ Joshua Valley Park & Creek - starting at Deer Run Park (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) All clean-ups will take place from 9 a.m. to noon unless oth erwise stated. The cross-town clean-up began in 1992 when 30 volun teers with the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights, were astounded with the amounts of garbage they cleaned up from Bronte Creek at the QEW overpass. The clean up expanded to five sites in 1993, and grew to 22 last year. More than six tonnes of garbage had been cleaned up. Last year, over 650 volunteers removed 2.5 tonnes of garbage, and another 1,300 students at 14 schools cleaned the school grounds and adjacent parks. It is estimated the clean-up saves the landscaping % *' , > . i t / . < ' ■•, ■ ! interior. decorators - v ; " *■ •>' .'•* ' ■ » V • cookware/,%•§: - r - f & f • d eclG ngLsScj ecki ng restoration ■ r y y * - v Water conditioning a ? \ Routine maintenance can stop drain clogs Question: Every time I turn around I'm standing in ankle-deep water in my shower because the drain gets clogged. Now I'm concerned that the drain clean ers I'm using may be hurting the plumb ing. Can you help? Answer: That depends on the type of drain cleaner you are using. It's true that caustic, acid-based chemical drain cleaners will sometimes dissolve clogs, but at the same time, they may be dis solving your pipes. Many potential drain problems can be averted with a little regular mainte nance, according to Steve Hall, of The Home Depot. Kitchen drains, which typically receive most of the greasy and gooey stuff, should be thor oughly flushed with hot water once a week. Shower and tub drains benefit from an occasion al dose of liquid bleach. And if your washing machine empties into a laundry tub, tie an old nylon stocking over the end of the rubber drain hose. The lint in your wash water can build up in drain pipes and eventually plug them. You should never have to use caustic drain cleaners. Once every six months or so, it's okay to treat your drains with a non-caus tic (copper sul fide- or sodium hydroxide-based) drain cleaner, which will not hurt your pipes. Question: The house we just pur chased has a 12- foot by 12-foot kitchen that has never been reno vated. In remod elling it, we want to install an island. Is there enough room? Answer: If you arrange cabinets along the perime ter of two walls, you should have just enough room to add an island. Space may be tight, so you might want to think about removing one wall to open the kitchen to another room, said Suzanne Morgan, of The Home Depot. Design guidelines call for at least 42 inches of space on all sides of an island. That will allow one cook to move about comfort ably. If more than one cook uses the space frequently, 48 to 54 inches of clearance is sug gested. The stan dard island width is 26 inches. If you plan to install an island cooktop or create an over hang for stools, add another 10 inches. Town of Oakville thousands of dollars in garbage removal costs, while at the same time creates a healthier, cleaner com munity. The annual clean-up is part of an eight-day Earth Week campaign culminating with a major clean-up of Lions Valley park on April 24th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers can enter a raffle for a season's pass for Conservation Halton, and a Halton Trail Guide Book donat ed by Conservation Halton. During the week, 24 schools will participate in Earth Week by cleaning up school proper ties. Most will have the clean-up on April 22nd, Earth Day.
