This December at Sacred Heart Rock- wood has been just that. We have celebrated each week of Advent with a beautiful liturgy together as a school community in our gym. Each week during Advent we light another candle on our Advent wreath, and join together in prayer and song. We have also been busily preparing for our school's Christmas Con- cert, and we are excited to share our songs and poems with our families. In addition to our regular curriculum studies, we have had several special activities during our 12 days of Christmas. We welcomed several guest readers to Sacred Heart, including May- or Chris White, Chief Mathew Williamson, Brit- tany from the Rockwood Public Library, and Wel- lington Catholic School Board Trustee Andrew Finoro. We are thankful to our readers for taking the time to share their fa- vourite Christmas stories with classes. Our cho i r en joyed singing Christmas carols with the seniors' group at the Rockwood library. We have also had some spirit days, wearing our Christmas hats and red/ white/green Christmas fashions. As we head into the Christmas season, we would like to wish every- one a very blessed and merry Christmas and all the best for 2018! Christmas is the sea- son of giving, and at St. Joseph's School we have taken this to heart and truly fulfilled God's wish for us to help others in need. On December 2, over 50 of our staff and stu- dents made their way to Toronto to hand out loomed scarves, food and toiletries to the home- less. We were able to do this through the generos- ity of our Catholic school community through our Project Warmth initia- tive. We would also like to thank some of our local businesses who gener- ously provided us with support for this cause. Thank you to Gian t Tiger, Dr. Chan's Dental Office, TD Canada Trust Bank, Cordi Bakery in Mississauga, as well as many of our families who prov ided dona- tions. With everyone's support we were able to hand out more than 100 meals to those in need as well as over 100 clothing items--scarves, gloves, hats--and other essen- tial items that many of us take for granted. We are grateful for the op- portunity to put God's Love into Action. Our school also partici- pated in a Food Drive to benefit the Acton Christ- mas Hamper program th rough S t . Vincen t Charities, as well, many families supported our Angel Tree program to provide toys to children in our community for Christmas. All of our students par- ticipated in the "Keep Christ in Christmas" Contest sponsored by the Knights of Colum- bus Council #8050. A donation was made by the Knights to the Hal- ton Catholic Children's E d u c a t i o n F u n d i n recognition of our par- ticipation. Two of our grade eight students, Julia G. and Michael Y. were also winners of the board wide HCDSB "Keep Christ in Christ- mas" video competition. We are very proud of their accomplishments. Our Advent Family Fun Night was a huge suc- cess. On December 13, over 65 of our families joined us to participate i n deco ra t ing cook- ies, Christmas crafts, family portraits, a choir performance and refresh- ments. We would like to thank Acton Sobeys for their donations to help make our night a success. Thank you to everyone who joined us. On December 15, all our grades four to eight students travelled to the Milton Cineplex to see the movie "Wonder". It was an excellent op- portunity to connect the elements we have dis- cussed in our classes as many of our classes have been reading the novel together. The virtues of empathy, acceptance and kindness are themes we have discussed in class and the movie also tied into our bullying pre- vention initiatives from November. We would also like to thank Superior Glove for again supporting our students by providing the Scientists in the School program. What a great opportunity for our stu- dents to be exposed to hands on science experi- ments and activities. We would like to wish the entire community of Acton a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Remember to Keep Christ in Christ- mas. acton high Eco Club Day Eco Club members traveled to Burlington to attend an "Eco Day" and lecture by Dr. David Su- zuki. ABC Company Start Up Grade 10 business stu- dents started their ABC Company project this December. Students had visits from local entre- preneurs and business professionals, and after the break they will meet with the Chamber of Commerce, Investor's Group and the Acton BIA. Students can receive up to $2,000 to run their own business this summer in our local community. Winter Wonderland Dance Acton High's annu- al semi-formal was on Thursday, and this year's theme was "Winter Won- derland". Student Council wanted to create a dance that would get everyone excited for the holidays by decorating with Christ- mas trees, snowflakes and gingerbread cookies. Semi is made possible by the leadership and dedication of Student Council mem- bers and the help of Acton High's teachers. Acton Communications Technology On December 5 Mr. Stark's students toured the Toronto Broadcast Center facilities where students met a variety of staff including Producers, Directors and Technicians. Highlights included a tour of the studio for CBC's "Q" radio show, and the crew pre-recording an Air Farce New Year's Eve Show sketch. At the end of the tour students sat in "The Current" studio and tested out the micro- phones. Connecting Acton High School Technology Students with Local Industry Acton High School grade 10 technology de- sign students completed a unit on logo design. Students were required to provide an updated and fresh new look to an existing local company logo. All students did an exceptional job on their custom signs made with the CNC machine. Mr. Tew was very impressed with the student's final projects, as they exceeded his expectations. Music Tid-Bits The Acton High School Music Department is wrapping up a busy De- cember. They traveled to three local elementary schools to perform a fes- tive mini concert. The evening concert on De- cember 7 featured the grade nine class, Senior Instrumental Music class, Jazz Band, Vocal Music class, Choir, and Con- cert Band and included an audience sing-along. The new year will bring competitions and a joint concert with the Acton Citizens' Band. SCHOOL REPORT will return in 2018
