THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, MAY 17, 2018 7THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MAY 17, 20186 May 15 to 21 marks the annual Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign to make Can- ada's roads the safest in the world. The campaign is supported by Transport Canada and is endorsed by police services from coast to coast. This year's themes in- clude: • Alcohol-impaired driving • Fatigue-impaired driving • Distracted driving • Drug-impaired driving • Aggressive driving • Occupant restraint use Our community has consistently identified traffic issues as a major concern, particularly im- paired driving, aggressive driving and distracted driving. During Canada Road Safety Week, motorists who travel anywhere within the Region of Halton--from our urban cen t res to our ru ra l areas--can expect to see an increased police pres- ence on our roadways. Here are some tips to ensure that Halton re- mains the safest large municipality in Canada: 1. Drive now, call and text later. Distracted driv- ing is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle collisions. 2. Slow down! Speed kills. Remember, we'll see you before you see us. Speed limits will be enforced. 3. If you consume alco- hol or drugs, don't drive. Impaired driving remains the leading criminal cause of death on Ontario road- ways. Drug-impaired driving is both detectable and enforceable. Road safety is a shared responsibility. The Hal- ton Reg iona l Po l i ce Service remains com- mitted to ensuring the safety of our community through a balanced ap- proach of education and enforcement initiatives. We encourage all road users to obey the rules of the road. I f y o u o b s e r v e a vehicle being operated in a manner which places you, or anyone else in danger, please call 9-1-1 for an immediate police response. Impaired driv- ing is considered a crime in progress. If you see it, call 9-1-1. WORD ON THE STREET With Alex Hilson Josh Chynces: "Healthcare. People having access to doctors. More resources for land ambulance. Right now, if you call 911, if the service is busy, you wait to get an ambulance. Other things are the environment. Reducing our carbon footprint. Also, hydro and gas prices. Why are we paying so much?" Pat Tyrrell: "Truck traffic through Acton, and a lot of that's related to the quarries. It seems like we're providing a lot of raw materials through those quarries for a small community area. We're giving a lot, perhaps to excess." Lindsay Cecile: "I'm from London. I would say the transit issue. Because when the students are in school for the year the busses are overrun and never on time." Kelvin Tsai: "To be very honest, I don't really follow Provincial politics. I live in BC. Recently, there was the pipeline issue. There's a lot controversy over it."
