There was live music, a barbeque, and, of course, gardening by volunteers like Carol and Nick Kaminski. - Alex Hilson photo On Sunday June 3, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Halton Police received a call from an attendant at the Esso gas station located at Highway 7 and 22 Side Road in the Town of Halton Hills. Police were advised that a male had just used a stolen credit card to purchase several hun- dred dollars in gift cards and had left in a vehicle toward Acton. Police were provided with the vehicle l icence plate and it was learned that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Durham Region. An officer located the suspect vehicle parked in front of the Shell gas station located on Queen Street near Acton Blvd. in Acton and observed the male suspect within the kiosk. After a brief confrontation, the male fled on foot and police quickly set up a perim- eter awaiting the arrival of a K9 unit. An off-duty Halton off icer who had just completed his nightshift and was on his way home observed the male in a residential area south of the Shell station. Again, the male fled the area running through back- yards into a forested area bordered by train tracks. As police continued to search for the suspect, a homeowner had contacted 911 to report a suspicious male on his rural property who had asked him to call a taxi. Officers converged on this area and again the male fled into a crop field. The male was observed by officers crawling in the low growth and was con- fronted by the K9 unit. The male was arrested without incident; how- ever, was found to have had a fixed blade knife concealed in his waist- band. Further investigation revealed that the male had en t e r ed s eve ra l vehicles while on the run from police in a likely attempt to steal one and make his escape. Police are asking area residents to report if their vehicle had been entered on this date and to contact police if they locate any discarded property in and around their homes. A 20-year-old Toron- to man is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing on a slew of charges including pos- session over $5,000, theft under $5,000, pos- session of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstruct and breach pro- bation.
