A year ago, Georgetown pia- nist Thomas Dobrovich brought home a silver medal from the prestigious Ontario Music Fes- tivals Association (OMFA) 2012 Provincial Finals for his extensive repertoire on the piano. With a year under his belt, the 18-year-old recentl\y tackled the challenging national competi- tion, the Canadian Music Com- petition (CMC) held this year in Sherbrooke, Quebec, bringing home a fi rst place in the piano in the 18 and under class. "It was a three-stage competi- tion," said Dobrovich. "The fi rst was in May of this year, and the second round was the Provin- cials, and both were held at the University of Toronto." After qualifying, Dobrovich was on his way to compete na- tionally in Sherbrooke. "For the fi rst round, we played for two judges, then at the Pro- vincials we had three judges," said Dobrovich. "But when we played at the nationals, we played in front of fi ve judges-- that was pretty intimidating." Not only did the competitors face fi ve judges, but they had to play one piece of music. "When you're competing at that level, you have to show how versatile you are, and picking the right piece of music is key," said Dobrovich. In the fi nal round of the Na- tionals, competitors had to play a concerto, in duet with another piano, with the second piano playing the orchestra part of the score. It gave the competitors the opportunity to show what talent they had to offer. After the day-long event, Do- brovich emerged with a fi rst place in his age/instrument category, 18 years and under-piano. "It felt good," said Dobrovich, "I felt really good coming home with a win from the Nationals." Leading up to the win, Do- brovich had been competing all over Ontario, in places like Scar- borough, Markham, Richmond Hill and Mississauga, to hone his skills and be prepared for the na- tional level competition. While in Richmond Hill, Do- brovich, received a special hon- our-- he received the Mayor's Award at a gala concert at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. 'That was a pretty special thing," said Dobrovich. "It felt good to be recognized for my playing." Although Dobrovich has the talent, he is fi rst to acknowledge his current music instructor, Yaroslav Pugach of Markham, has helped elevate him to his present level of playing. But Dobrovich is also quick to add that his fi rst steps in mu- sic can be attributed to his mom Kathy, a teacher in music theory, piano and fl ute, who encouraged him to spend hours practising at the piano.
