The Eagles swept through the eight-team field in Chatham recently with five straight victories, defeat- ing the Windsor Hawks 6-5 in the final for the second year in a row. Heading into the championship game, George- town's juniors were set on the mound with aces Mat- thew Lahn starting and Jeremy McDonald available to relieve. Lahn pitched into the sixth inning with the score tied at four before tournament MVP McDonald took over, snuffing out a couple of Windsor rallies with strikeouts to earn the save, along with driving in the winning run. Captain Kyle Westwater provided some insurance with another RBI. Manager Dave Lahn said the team is poised to take a run at a fourth-straight title with 13 players eligible to return in 2014. The Georgetown Raiders posted a pair of victories against the Mil- ton IceHawks over the weekend in Ontario Junior Hockey League pre- season play. On Friday night in Georgetown, Phil Kiss, Mitchell Kreis, John Ad- ams, Adam Mascherin and Andrew Court scored for the Raiders in a 5-2 win. Gavin Shantz, Liam Clare, Fran- cois Plamondon, Brendan Jacome and Richard Court tallied for the visitors in a 5-3 result at Milton Sat- urday evening. Raider netminder Michael Stili- adis was credited with complete- game wins in both contests. The teams also played a 3-on-3 overtime period on each night in or- der to get familiarized with a new rule change set to come into effect this season. The Raiders visit the Lindsay Muskies Friday night before playing host to the Oakville Blades Saturday at the Alcott Arena at 7:30 p.m. The local-area minor hockey community is mourning the loss of longtime volunteer Hal Pells of Georgetown, who passed away over the week- end at age 68. Pells served as president of the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association for nearly two decades and was involved with the organization for about 40 years. A Scarborough native, Pells also holds the rare distinction of earning the Georgetown Hockey Heri- tage Award and induction into the Halton Hills Sports Museum Hall of Fame at its inaugural ceremony in 2007. Pells was instrumental in establishing development initiatives for the GMHA, including the introductory- level CHIP program, as well as a fund to assist under- privileged youths. Pells's name also graces the championship trophy for the GMHA's midget/juvenile house league divi- sion, for which he was convenor prior to becoming president. Upon receiving the Hockey Heritage Award in 2008, Pells became emotional when reflecting on his devotion to the GMHA. "It sounds like a cliché when people give out ac- colades or appreciation in our organization, but with us, it does come from the heart," he said. "A lot of the people within the Georgetown Mi- nor Hockey executive are like me. They love their work and they don't want to leave. They like the status quo and what we've been able to achieve." Pells was a loving and devoted father to Kristie (Dave) Henderson and Ryan (Leeann) Pells. Proud grandfather to his three grandchildren Zack Hen- derson, Gauge Pells and Makenna Pells. Loved and adored brother to Lynda (the late Clark) Pells- Wallace and Deb (Howard) Pells-Sculnick. Prede- ceased by his parents Harold (Dorothy) Pells, and June (Gary) Hogge.
