If you've noticed solar panels going up on rooftops in your neighbourhood, then you've noticed a growing trend where residential homeowners are taking the pow- er back into their own hands. These folks are creating green energy and most of them are selling it all right back to the grid. They receive 20- year contracts as a micro-embedded generator to ensure their return on investment is secure over the long-term. If you're familiar with Ontario Power Authority's Mi- croFIT program, then you know that the rates they pay have changed over the summer (they went down) and some of the rules changed as well. Now you might think that you've missed the boat on better rates, but you've also missed the boat on higher product costs. So for a smaller investment now, you can still achieve a return on your investment in the 10 per cent range. If the MicroFIT program isn't for you, then you might consider simply going for a net-metering project. Under a MicroFIT contract you sell all of the electric- ity to the grid, under a net-metering contract you use it in your home and the excess turns your meter backwards. This is a viable alternative when you consider that the rates we pay will only go up, and in fact have gone up on average about 10 per cent annually since time-of-use began.
