•T he IFP• H alton H ills, Thursday, O ctober 17, 2013 29 Florrie Alice Warren November 20, 1920 - October 10, 2013 Beloved wife of James Frederic Warren (d. 2008) Florrie Alice Warren, née Holmes, died peacefully on October 10 at Lakeside Long Term Care, Parkdale, Toronto, age 92. Wife of the late Jim Warren, mother of David and Christina "Tina", both of Toronto, and grandmother of Jonathan and Matthew. Predeceased by parents Annie née Graham and Oliver Holmes, and sister Mildred "Buddy" Holmes, a well-known church organist. Florrie grew up in depression-era New Waterford, Cape Breton, N.S. and spent summers at the old family homestead in nearby Homeville. She trained as a nurse in Halifax and met Jim at a party onboard a battleship in Halifax harbour where he served in the RCN and as a Spitfire pilot for the RCAF toward the end of WWII. Florrie followed Jim to Toronto after the War and they married in 1948. Working as an RN and charge nurse at SickKids Hospital in Toronto in the baby boom years, Florrie helped create the hospital's first admissions system. After the family moved to Georgetown, she assisted Jim in his industrial design practice and made their home a welcome place for their friends and those of David and Tina. When Jim's career took him to Lahore, Pakistan and then Bangkok, Thailand in the 1960s, Florrie braved these new challenges, travelling alone with the kids to join him there, and learning to maneuver servants and local customs. They later settled in London, then Kingston and Port Credit, before moving to Lakeside. With her fl aming red hair and Gaelic dry humour, Florrie was a spirited woman, and remained so to the end. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Skinner & Middlebrook Funeral Home, 128 Lakeshore Road East, Mississauga (Port Credit), Ontario. Reception to follow. Donations in Florrie's memory may be made to Parkinson Society Canada.
