Police were called and managed to free the man. A small glass fragment in the mechanism caused the malfunction. • Police caught two juveniles who had a taste for sweets red-handed in Feb- ruary with a toboggan loaded with boxes containing 824 chocolate bars, 24 boxes of chocolates and 32 bags of chocolate. The two had broken into the Neilson's plant on Guelph St. • A 2,500 seat arena and a library ad- joining Gordon Alcott arena with a $1.2 million price tag was proposed to Hal- ton Hills Council by the special building committee in March. • A new world record for a cow was set in Oakville in May when an Indiana farm paid $200,000 to Claude Picket of Hornby for Romandale Reflection Chris- tie, a Holstein. • Halton Hills Planning Board approved a plaza next to Gordon Alcott Arena in June. • After nearly 50 years on Main St., Sid and Lucille Silver retired from their Sil- ver's Department Store in September. 1976...in the news • In August a freak twister ripped through a section of Georgetown leav- ing uprooted trees, smashed windows, toppled garages and sheds and hun- dreds of bent and downed television antennae in its wake. • In September it was reported the first calf in North America from a frozen em- bryo was born at Modern Ova Trends in Norval. • In November the axe fell at Domtar Fine Paper Ltd. with the announcement that the company would cease opera- tion in February 1977. • Actor Richard Burton was in George- town in November filming scenes for the movie Equus. While here with her husband, Burton's wife Susan Hunt, was taken to the ER at Georgetown Hospital. Hospital officials declined to comment on why she was there. • In July it was reported that more than 200 people signed a petition to stop construction of a $900,000 addition to the Esquesing municipal building on Seventh Line. Later in July it was report- ed the expansion plan was going down the drain since the majority of council- lors no longer supported it.
