But it was a double jolt when he found his 75-acre farm across the road in Brampton was also a candidate for a Peel landfill. It was one of the seven potential landfill sites in Halton Hills that the Region was considering. • The first mayor of Halton Hills, Thomas J. Hill-- Tom to everybody-- died in August. Upon his election as mayor, Hill warned against parochialism, a stand he adhered to throughout his five years as mayor. In 1982 he returned to politics capturing the Ward 2 seat, the position he held at the time of his death. • Halton Hills council voted 9-3 to offer $600,000 for the Stevens' estate on Maple Ave. as the future home for a municipal complex. However a citizens' group quickly formed to protest the purchase. • After five years as Mayor Pete Pomeroy was elected Regional Chair, sending the local council into turmoil-- Russ Miller, Ross Knechtel and Ric Morrow vied for the mayoralty job in a possible byelection, but Halton Hills Council decided instead-- on a 7-5 vote- to appoint Miller the new mayor, Jake Kuiken the new regional councillor and Peter Norton as the new Ward 2 councillor. 1983...in the news • Bruce Lewis followed in his father's foot- steps when he was elected District Chief of Halton Hills Volunteer Fire Department Area 2 (Georgetown). It was the first snowfall in about three months. • The annual madness known as the Jay- cees Crazy Boat Race saw beds, bathtubs, homemade submarines, and even out- houses on rafts cruising the Credit on April 9. The 16th annual race has put the town on the map for early spring events. The first to cross the line was Terry Campbell's Grain Monster. • After six years of effort by Halton Hills council, Minister of Housing Claude Bennett approved the Georgetown urban boundary that would include all of the "McLaughlin lands" known today as Georgetown South.
