The cost: $3 million. • A doll made by June Lerch of Georgetown was judged the best at the International Doll Convention in New York State. • Ballinafad residents are in shock after The General Store, owned by Bonnie Walker and the hub of the community, was razed by fire. 1987...in the news • Georgetown made history when Globe Productions and Georgetown Little Theatre productions were nominated 15 times at the Association of Community Theatres of Central Ontario (ACT-CO). The two groups came home with five Theas. • In April, an end of an era came as Red and Jean Asseltine concluded their duties as radio dispatchers for Halton Hills Fire De- partment. The couple had been calling the firefighters from their beds since 1974. • Four thousand former students and teach- ers of Georgetown District High School re- turned for the Centennial weekend in July-- the biggest party ever to hit Town. • There's a change the number of rail cars going through Georgetown each year which carry dangerous goods-- it will in- crease by 50 per cent. Already the CN line through Georgetown carries more freight cars and tankers-- around 20,000 annual- ly-- containing hazardous goods than any other line in the Metro Toronto area. • The majority of Halton Hills stores will be closed Sunday, Dec. 27 despite the Prov- ince's announcement that all stores may open without fear of prosecution.
