The 26- member staff moved from its Armstrong Ave. location into the 3,600 sq. office in the mall. In April the newspaper was named best in its class at the 1999 On- tario Community Newspaper Associa- tion Awards. • The extension of Hall Rd. to Tenth Line as a possible Norval bypass was elimi- nated by Halton Region on its list of pre- ferred alternatives in May. • In May, Melanie Jans won the Cana- dian Women's Squash Championship for the second time. • Police were investigating a possible link to biker gangs in connection with a powerful bomb that was found in a newspaper box on Guelph St. in July. The bomb was picked up unwittingly by a driver for the Toronto Sun who dis- covered it later in the day at his Guelph home. Waterloo Police Explosive Dispos- al Unit rendered the bomb inoperable. 2000...in the news • Halton Hills Bulldogs won the Blair Trophy for the second time in five years in July. • The Canadian Cancer Society's On- tario Division announced in August it would close the Society's Georgetown office. A Save the Georgetown Cancer Society Office campaign was started by The Independent & Free Press, ask- ing residents who wanted the office to remain open to fill out a ballot and drop it off at the newspaper. • About 200 Georgetown District High School students protested the ab- sence of some extracurricular activities due to the ongoing dispute between teachers and the Province outside the school in October. • With just 500 votes between them Kathy Gastle won the mayor's seat ousting incumbent Marilyn Serjeant- son in November. • Halton MP incumbent Julian Reed coasted to an easy win in the federal election in November. • Longtime Councillor Kathy Gastle an- nounced her intention in June to seek the Mayor's job, citing a need for new and stronger leadership.
