The youth of today are our leaders of tomor- row and they deserve to be recognized for their contributions. The Ontario Community Newspapers Associa- tion (OCNA)-- of which The Independent & Free Press is a member-- is currently accepting nomi- nations for its 2013 Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year Awards. The OCNA encourages Ontario residents to nominate a special individual who invests their spare time into community service, has the cour- age and drive to overcome the challenges of living with a disability or illness and still dedicates time and effort toward others. A nominee can be a 'hero' or someone who act- ed quickly in a desperate time to help someone else. Most of all, these individuals go above and beyond what is expected of someone their age. We all know someone who falls under the cat- egory of being a 'good kid.' We encourage readers to consider nominating someone between the ages of six and 17 today. Nominations for 2013 Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year Awards will be accepted until Nov. 30. Up to 12 nominees will be selected as the final recipients for the 2013 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award and will be recognized at a special ceremony in spring 2014. All local nominees will receive a certificate of recognition and a mention of their efforts in this newspaper. The Independent & Free Press Honour a 'good kid' Letters to the editor Dear editor,, The October 17 edition of The Independent & Free Press included a brief article entitled "HPV debate put on hold". While, I was unaware that the Halton Catholic District School Board had banned public health nurses from administering the HPV (Human papillomavirus) vaccine in their schools, I am pleased that Burlington Trustee John Morrison would like to reopen the discussion. However, it should have been noted in your article that HPV is not JUST "a common virus that is usually spread during sexual activity and skin-to-skin contact with an infected person". I believe it is more important to mention that high-risk HPVs cause virtually all cervical cancers. They also cause most anal cancers and some vaginal, vulvar, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. Health Canada has approved two HPV vaccines that will pre- vent cervical cancer in women and anal cancer in men. This issue is so much more than preventing the spread of a sexually transmitted dis- ease, it is the first vaccine that has been proven to prevent some types of cancer. Dear editor, We are pleased with the recent road and curb construction in front of our office/home at the corner of Church/ Market Streets. During the construction phase, all workers were very accommodating and always very friendly. They carried out their tasks promptly and always kept access available to our patients. The end result is beautiful. The newly-renovated library is stunning and the pavement and curbs have fur- ther added to the visual delight. Also, the addition of a four-way stop was an excellent idea as it slows down traffic and allows for better viewing on either side of the street. Thanks to all for a job well done. Letters policy Dear editor, Having been away from George- town for 20 years, in retirement in Parry Sound, we thought when we saw the high traffic volume, and the crowds of people, life would be very different. However, we have been pleasantly surprised to find how friendly everyone is-- and helpful. We were in the laundromat re- cently and a lady customer gave me three loonies because we didn't have the right change for the machines. When we have needed help in the grocery stores someone has always offered help, so we have been very impressed. It still is a great town to live in. John & Jan Wickens, Georgetown
