In 1 District (Halton Hills/Mil- ton) police have launched Project Safe Roads to augment RIDE. In that project, Community Sup- port Officers along with COPPS volunteers will be visiting licenced establishments to educate owners and staff on the Safe Roads project. They will distribute posters and ac- tion cards for the reporting of im- paired drivers. Twitter will be uti- lized to kick off the project as well. Community Support Officers will tweet the statistics daily (follow @HRPSMiltHH). There will also be a signboard in front of the George- town and Milton police stations. Additionally, High School Liasion Officers have two nights of educa- tion for impaired driving (RIDE 101). The Georgetown night will be held tonight (Thursday). Police have also launched a pilot initiative on "alcohol countermea- sures" where officers in low profile police vehicles will be dedicated to tracking down and apprehending suspected impaired drivers. Those officers have received some sup- plemental training in proven tech- niques geared toward identifying and apprehending impaired driv- ers. The pilot program supplements the RIDE officers conducting spot checks on Halton roadways. After the first day of operation those officers made two arrests for impaired driving and issued numerous suspensions on drivers who indicated a "warn" reading on roadside alcohol screening devices. A drug arrest was also made by the officers. RIDE begins Visual Arts Centre 515 Main St. Glen Williams. Gallery open during December, Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 5pm. www.williamsmill.com Gifts that last.
