Description
Between 1950 and 1970, Ontario school boards centralized the public schools in their jurisdiction. The old one or two room "S.S" (School Section) schools were closed as sleek, multi-roomed modern schools were built.

The Trafalgar Township village of Palermo was centered around the "Dundas Highway" and Bronte Road in modern-day northwest Oakville. S.S. No 2, Palermo, the one-room schoolhouse on the north side of Dundas east of Old Bronte Road, is now the home of the Trafalgar Township Historical Society. Marg Wark was the last teacher at S.S. No 2. The new school wasn’t ready on time and the students were taught in the Palermo hall, St Lukes & the old Palermo school until it was completed. In about 1965, a new addition was added - after this photograph was taken.

The school in this photograph is at 2561 Valleyridge Drive, just south of Dundas Street and west of Bronte Road, in the old village of Palermo.

Charles Oland owned his own studio in Oakville, Ontario. His family lived in "Snow Manor" on Wilson Street. His work also appeared in local newspapers in the 1950's and 1960's.
Notes
The former Halton Board of Education had also owned a school named Palermo Public School, located on Bronte Road, on the east side and south of Hwy. 5. This school was closed and sold in 1978.
