- Description
- Between 1950 and 1970, Ontario school boards centralized the public schools in their jurisdiction. The old one or two room "S.S" (School Section) schools were closed as sleek, multi-roomed modern schools were built.
Daniel Munn, who owned the land around Sixth Line and Dundas Street that eventually became the hamlet of Munn's Corners, built a log cabin school on his property which doubled as a church on Sundays in 1808. Land for a new church and school on the northeast side of Dundas Street at Sixth Line was deeded by Jordan Munn, another son, in 1842. A frame church was built in 1844 and a school, S.S. No.3 was built at the present-day Munn's Church site in 1852. In 1900, a new, brick S.S. No.3A was built in a new location on Daniel Munn's original land grant.
The school in this photograph replaced this last S.S. No. 3A and it is at 1511 Sixth Line, just south of Upper Middle Road, Oakville, Ontario.
Charles Oland owned his own studio in Oakville, Ontario. His family lived in "Snow Manor" on Wilson Street. His work also appeared in local newspapers in the 1950's and 1960's. - Subject(s)
