OAC SPORTS & LEISURE An excellent season for the Halton minor midget AAA Hurricanes was capped off Saturday with several local- area players getting their names called in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. A record seven Georgetown residents were selected in the 15-round draft, which was conducted on-line, including 15-year-old twins Matthew and Mitchell Kreis. Matthew, a 5-foot-10 centre who had 22 goals, 28 assists for 50 points in 38 games this season with the Hurricanes, was taken in the fi rst round, 15th over- all, by the Barrie Colts. "Matthew is a skilled two-way centre with a high compete level and we are extremely happy to get him," said Colts' general manager Jason Ford. "He skates well, has excellent hock- ey sense and he plays hard in all three zones. Matthew is a character kid with plenty of upside." Defenceman Mitchell Kreis, at 5-foot- 10 and 140 pounds, was selected by the London Knights in the third round. Six-foot, 208-pound Michael McNiv- en of Georgetown was the third overall goalie taken in the draft by the Owen Sound Attack in round four. In round six, 6-foot-3, 204-pound blueliner Matt Mercer went to the Ot- tawa 67's, followed by 5-foot-10, 150- pound centreman Chris Klack, chosen by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Another Hurricanes' centre, 5-foot- 11, 160-pound Josh Dickinson, whose brother Jason plays for the OHL's Guel- ph Storm, was taken in the eighth round by the Sudbury Wolves. The Storm took 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-winger Aleks Rapp of Georgetown in the 12th round. Seven local players taken in OHL draft Three 20-year-old Georgetown residents have played major roles for the Cambridge Winter Hawks in their recent run to the Midwestern Jr. B Hockey League championship. Team captain Trevor Hache has anchored the blue line with some of- fensive upside while forwards Todd Bannerman and Chris Taylor make up two-thirds of one of the more po- tent scoring lines in the league, now aptly named the Cherrey Tree Line. The Winter Hawks beat the Strat- ford Cullitons 4-0 in Game 5 of their best-of-7 fi nal series last week to win the Cherrey Cup as the Midwestern Conference champions at the Galt Arena Gardens and now move on to the Sutherland Cup championship against the winners of the Golden Horseshoe and Western Ontario con- ferences starting this week. Like they've done since the three were reunited prior to Game 3 of the Mid-Western semifi nal against Kitch- ener, the Tree Line has produced. Bannerman started the scoring at 7:03, converting a pass to the slot from Taylor, before linemate Mitch Klie popped in Bannerman's pass in a mirror-image play just over three minutes later. That brought their 10-game total to 46 points-- Klie with 17 (12 goals, 5 assists), Bannerman with 15 (6 goals, 9 assists) and Taylor with 14 (4 goals, 10 assists). "The chemistry between the three of them is outstanding," said Winter Hawks' head coach Pete Crosby. "You put a line together and you don't know how it's going to work out, but the guys make it happen. The chemistry between those three, the friendship between those three is outstanding and they just feed off each other. You can see it especially in the offensive zone in their cycle play, as they put pucks (in areas) without looking because they know where the other guy is going to be." The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Hache is in his third year with Cambridge and has two goals and four assists in 17 post-season games. During the regu- lar season, Hache scored 12 goals and added 25 assists in 46 starts to go along with 144 penalty minutes. Taylor and Bannerman played with the Oakville Blades of the OJHL last season. This year, Taylor was second in team scoring with 24 goals and 28 assists, while Bannerman was third with 15-28-43 in 37 games. --With fi les from Bill Doucet The Halton Hills Synchronized Swimming Club will host a "Try Syn- chro" night this Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at the Georgetown Indoor Pool.
