She suffered from anxiety, con- stipation, depression, fatigue, foggy thinking, insomnia and weight gain. Menopause is a normal, natural process that all women will experi- ence alongside symptoms of hypo- thyroidism. Our hormone balance begins to shift early between our 30s to late- 40s. Symptoms are directly infl u- enced by stress levels, poor nutrition, environmental toxins and overall general health. It is important to recognize that no TWO women's experience will be the same-- which is why clients need to be treated individually with cus- tomized treatment plans and proper testing. For most women, menopause and peri-menopause brings both a physi- cal and emotional upheaval linked to transitional changes both in our body and often our personal life. Many women will suffer from symptoms of undiagnosed hypo-thy- roidism. Hypothyroidism has been tagged the "unsuspected illness" because blood tests can be normal and diag- nosis often missed. The missed diagnosis may occur because our medical system relies ex- clusively on testing of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) when a full panel of thyroid blood tests (TSH, T4 and T3) are required to make proper diagnosis. TSH is an indirect mea- sure of thyroid function and does not correlate well with symptoms. Symptoms experienced with hypo- thyroidism may include: Low energy, fatigue, depression, weight gain, cold hands and feet, slowness of thought, puffy facial swelling, fl uid retention, dry skin, brittle nails, constipation and irregular cycles. Not all symptoms of hypothyroid- ism are physical and thyroid imbal- ance can affect women's emotional well-being with symptoms such as feeling lethargic, depressed and ex- periencing lack of ambition. A balanced approach to treating menopause and peri-menopause starts with a hormonal analysis which provides a baseline of all hor- mone levels including estradiol, pro- gesterone, testosterone, DHEA and morning cortisol. Thyroid is tested by a full thyroid blood panel. Additional testing of iodine levels is also key. Iodine defi - ciency damages the thyroid gland and can cause enlarged goiter. A Urine Iodine-Bromine Kit can be used to test for optimal iodine uptake by the thyroid. Testing is a fundamental step used to determine the extent of thyroid imbalance and other hormones asso- ciated with peri-menopause or meno- pause. Once test results are received a customized treatment plan. For many women, their treatment of choice is bio-identical hormones. Bio-identical hormones are pre- scription creams or capsules which use natural powders identical in structure to our own endogenous hor- mones. Dosages are customized per client depending on the results of the Saliva Hormone Test and matched individually to each woman's needs and symptoms. Bio-identical pre- scriptions are created by the on-site compounding pharmacy at Avita. For other women, their treatment may be a combination of both bio- identical and detoxifi cation/natural supplements depending on whether their baseline hormone levels. A de- toxifi cation alone may enhance our body's ability to effectively manage and resolve the symptoms of hor- mone imbalance including hypothy- roidism. In addition, hypothyroidism is best treated using a natural thyroid extract such as desiccated thyroid hormone to restore the thyroid to proper hormonal balance. Dosages should start low and gradually increase as needed based on re-testing and close monitoring of symptoms. At Avita Integrative Health Clinic, clients are consistently monitored for symptoms of thyroid imbalance especially if physical symptoms, sali- va testing and blood work show signs of inadequate thyroid hormone lev- els needed for optimal health. Our focus should always be on sustaining and reinforcing our body in its own regeneration of good hor- monal health.
