Johnson, who is enrolled in the golf and turf management program at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga., earned a spot in next week's 72-hole National Ju- nior College Athletic Association Division I Men's Championship at Texas Tech University in Lubbock starting Tuesday after getting the 10th and fi nal berth the district tourney on a tiebreaker last week. The 18-year-old Club at North Halton member began the 54-hole district qualifi er in South Carolina with sparkling rounds of 70-71 to stand at one under par heading into the fi nal round, then faltered some- what on the back nine to fi nish with a 77, missing a pair of four-foot birdie putts on the fi nal two holes. But Johnson, ranked 77th by the NJCAA, prevailed through retro- gression on the tiebreaker thanks to his opening-round score. He credits ABAC men's golf coach Herb Hen- drix with fi ne-tuning his game and conditioning to be better prepared for the heat and pressure of a major tournament. "Coach Herb found a couple of things that I could improve on and we've really found common ground together," said the 5-foot-7, 140- pound Johnson, who has won a few Canadian Junior Golf Association events and is currently the two-time North Halton junior champ. "My mental game wasn't totally there and my physical ability wasn't where it should've been. He really got me on track and I've been run- ning a mile or mile and a half every morning to build up my fi tness and that's why I played so well at dis- trict. Right now it's pretty hot down here-- for me anyway-- and it's probably going to be even warmer in Texas, but I'm really excited to play in a national championship." With aspirations of landing a scholarship at a Division I NCAA school upon graduating from ABAC next spring, Johnson hopes to catch the attention of scouts on hand next week with a good showing. He returns home to Georgetown this weekend after fi nishing exams and will play in North Halton's ju- nior open before heading south again. Following the tournament in Texas, Johnson will work through the summer at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Georgetown and plans to play in a few events in this area, in- cluding the Toronto Star Amateur, which will be held at The Club at North Halton July 16-19, and the Golf Association of Ontario Men's Amateur Championship in Colling- wood July 9-12. Samantha Spencer of George- town South teed off the 2013 season with a tournament victory at the Vertdure Junior Spring Open in Quebec, winning by three shots over the runner- up in some wintry conditions. The 16-year- old Club at North Halton member recorded a pair of rounds of 75 to win the juve- nile division, and her score was second amongst the junior girls. Spencer, a Christ the King stu- dent, will be in B.C. next week for a CN Women's Canadian Tour event and the CN Future Links Champi- onships. Joel Albany of Georgetown also competed at the Quebec tourney, shooting 75-78 to fi nish in a tie for seventh in the junior boys' category at nine over par.
