A Georgetown man believes someone poisoned his son's dog-- and he's hoping anyone with information about the inci- dent will contact Halton Police or Crime Stoppers. Alex Soler of Pomeroy Court thinks someone fed their schnoodle Oreo rat poison or put it in their backyard where the dog ate it. The family learned the dog had in- gested rat poison from their vet last Tuesday when they took him in to be checked because they found red rings on his stomach and sides. Soler said the vet immediately knew the dog had eaten rat poison and put him on Vitamin K-- an anticoagulant. When a rodent ingests rat poison it interrupts the liver's abil- ity to make the proteins for clotting the blood, resulting in death from internal hemorrhaging. "He's doing perfectly fi ne," said Soler. "He's a sweet dog." It's "pretty cruel" to poison his dog, Soler said. "Someone like this shouldn't be walking around." Halton Police are investigating the incident. Soler said their three dogs bark when people walk behind their home, which backs onto vacant land near Maple Creek Park. "People use it as a walkway," said Soler. On the night of Thursday, May 16 Soler said someone tried to reach over their fence and hit Oreo with a stick. He said the dogs often bark when someone walks behind their fence. The person couldn't be seen and Sol- er's wife called out to the person who said the dogs were "annoying." Soler also said the person said they could have him arrested for trespassing. Soler believes the poisoning incident occurred the following Monday or Tues- day. After learning the dog had eaten poi- son the Solers checked their backyard, but didn't fi nd any evidence of rat poi- son. Soler said there had been a heavy downpour the following day and "I as- sume it would have all been washed away." On Sunday night Soler said their oth- er dog Lennon, a Pomeranian, found a bone in the backyard he said someone had tossed over the fence. Fearful there might be poison on it they fed the dogs hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. They all appear to be fi ne. They are watching the dogs more closely now when they're in the yard. "We would appreciate someone do- ing the right thing and calling, and help- ing to solve this," said Soler. "Some poor animal is going to end up dead." This is not the fi rst incident of a dog ingesting rat poison in Georgetown. Last July Nicky Snook's dog Roper ate rat poison he found in their backyard. Fortunately he was treated quickly and survived, but another dog, a Shih Tzu named Tucker owned by Velda Webb, was not so fortunate and died from in- gesting what was believed to be rat poi- son. Anyone with information about the Soler incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or Halton Police Acting Detective Sgt.
