Car smashes into mall store No one was seriously hurt after a car smashed through the front window of the Winners/Homesense store at Georgetown Market Place shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday. Halton Regional Police Staff Sgt. John Karcz said the the crash occured when the driver-- an elderly woman-- "mistook the accelerator for the brake." She was the only person in the car. Karcz said the woman and a customer in the store were taken to Georgetown Hospital for "precautionary measures" but neither were injured. As the collision occurred on private property, charges are not likely, said Karcz. There was no estimate of damage. Local resident Dave Frost saw the inci- dent as he was driving towards the woman's vehicle, a Suzuki Aerio, when she made a right turn into the building. "She came out of the second lane in front of the store and... accelerated, just missed that (concrete) pole and went right through the window," said Frost, who esti- mated the woman to be in her mid-70s. "I reversed my car and ran into the store to make sure she was okay. She was hold- ing her left bicep and she was shaken. I was shaken. Another fi ve seconds and she would have crashed into me instead of the store. There were a couple of girls who were standing outside having a cigarette and I think they jumped 50 feet in the air." Julie Solomon of Norval was in the store looking for a wedding gift at the time of the accident but didn't immediately know that a vehicle had entered the store. "It wasn't a prolonged noise. It was a very sudden sound-- not like a crash or a squeal-- it was just a bang," she said. "I thought all the mirrors had fallen down or something like that and then we realized the car was a good 20 feet inside the store (where the china section is lo- cated). The woman beside me was in shock just because it was so bizarre and another woman had a cut on her foot but it seemed like everyone else was okay. The (driver)cer- tainly wasn't braking when she drove in." Janice McCracken of Georgetown was in the store's men's department at the time. "As I turned, this car just comes through the front of the store," she said. " I just went running over. It was scary."
