Somerville was elected to the post, which runs for a year-long term effective im- mediately, at FCM's Annual Conference in Vancouver Sunday, beating out Bramp- ton Mayor Susan Fennell. "I am truly humbled by the support I received from all areas of Canada," said Somerville, who has rep- resented Halton Region at FCM for the last fi ve years. Somerville's candidacy for the V-P position had the support of Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville, Burlington and Halton Region councils. Mayor Rick Bonnette and Councillors Joan Robson, and Mike O'Leary attended the conference and cast votes. "My role on council will be a lot busier handling this, but I know I have the sup- port of all of Halton's mayors and council- lors," said Somerville. He added now Halton Hills and Halton Region will "have a seat with the group that is going to be doing the lobbying to the federal government." He said the approximately $2 million the Town of Halton Hills receives annually from the Federal Gas Tax Fund and about $700,000 from the GST re- bate are due to lobbying ef- forts by FCM. The organiza- tion's Green Municipal Fund also made it possible for the Town to secure lower cost loans to replace Acton Li- brary and renovate and ex- pand Georgetown Library. Bonnette said "Clark's hard work on the FCM board over the past fi ve years was recognized by mayors and councillors across Canada." "He will do an outstand- ing job for urban and rural communities as third vice- president of FCM," said Bonnette. "On behalf of FCM's nearly 2,000 mem- ber-municipalities across Canada, I'm very pleased to congratulate Clark Somerville on being elected as FCM's newest vice president" said Claude Dauphin, President of FCM. The position is traditionally a stepping- stone to the organization's president's job as the third-vice president typically progresses annually up the ladder to the top post.
