Teen to get Edinburgh Award Youth seeks to help kids with cancer On Saturday (June 15), a Georgetown teen will be among 76 young people from across Ontario to receive the Sil- ver Award of Achievement from Ontario Lieutenant Governor David Onley, as part of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, at Queen's Park in Toronto. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, open to youths ages 14 to 25, challenges young people in four areas: Community Service, Skill Development, Physical Fitness and Adventurous Journey. By completing the requirements of each section, youth become active, healthy and involved, which is essential for their future and the future of the community. Jesse House, 16, of Georgetown is an active member of Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps 676, Lorne Scots, and was honoured for the following: Community Service: Community ser- vice activities for local Legion Branch. Adventurous Journey: Gold Star Level training, Army Cadets at Rock- wood Conservation Area. Skill: Marksmanship. Physical Recreation: Biathlon, run- ning, push-ups, sit-ups, swimming and basketball. The awards will be handed out in a ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. A Georgetown girl wants to help little kids with cancer and has decided to give two ways to Angel Hair for Kids. Selena Mezzatesta, 7, is donating her hair to the organization that provides wigs to fi nancially disadvantaged children in Canada who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment, and she's also raising money for the organization. Selena hopes to raise $1,000, which covers the manufacturing and related costs for one child to get a wig of her own. She is collecting money on a giving page at http://www.canadahelps.org/Giv- ingPages/GivingPage.aspx?gpID=26299. Selena has also decided to give a por- tion of her fi rst communion gifts as part of her donation and is having a garage sale to help raise funds Saturday (June 15) from 8 a.m. to noon at 35 Miller Dr. Donated items for the sale are also wel- come.
