Applause and cheers rang through a packed public gallery during Mon- day night's council meeting at the Civic Centre after Halton Hills Council unanimously approved a staff recommen- dation to waive development charges for a Halton Hills Christian School project. The privately-run non- profi t school at 11643 Tra- falgar Rd. plans to build a 6,060 sq. ft. (563 sq. m.) ad- dition to allow classes cur- rently housed in portables to return to the main build- ing. The school, fi rst built in 1965, has had four additions since then to accommodate growing enrolment. Its pupil count currently sits at 296 pre-school to Grade 8 stu- dents-- surpassing student growth projections by 9 per cent. Among the Town fees for the building project is a contribution of $25,260 for development charges. Last year, the Town waived DC charg- es of $7,012 for an addition to accom- modate pre-school and Kindergarten programs. "As we expand, we wish to contin- ue to be a good citizen and partner to the community of Halton Hills," said school board chair Ron Sneltjes in his presentation to Halton Hills council. "Our expansion is completely funded by donors in our community and it is our commitment to continue to serve the popu- lation of Halton Hills as a non-profi t organization. By our request today to seek the waiving of development fees, it is our goal to keep tuition affordable for the families of Halton Hills, and to address the needs of Halton Hills within our programs and initiatives." According to the school's website it has reached $1.8 million in pledges and gifts of its $2.1 million goal. The building project will begin this summer. Councillor Jane Fogal said she had no problem supporting the recom- mendation, saying the benefi ts that HHCS gives back to Halton Hills far exceeds the $25,000 waiver.
