T h e IF P • B ig D a d d y •Thursday, June 13, 2013 3 With Father's Day fast approaching, families will be scouring local shops looking for the perfect gift for Dad. With all the frenzied shopping, don't forget to spend some quality time with Dad to re- mind him how much he's appreciated. Planting trees is a great way to con- nect with nature and each other. Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is hosting a community tree planting event in Hal- ton Hills-- the perfect activity to share with Dad. On Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fairy Lake in Acton, partici- pants will help plant trees around the lake to beautify the landscape, improve air quality and provide habitat for lo- cal wildlife. Festivities also include wild birds on site, games and activities, and a special Father's Day treat. A poll conducted in 2010 showed that 80 per cent of Canadian fathers only wanted "quality time with their families" for Father's Day. A comparable poll of American fathers uncovered gifts they absolutely did not want to receive: ties, "World's Best Dad" shirts, mugs, dress shirts, and homemade crafts. "Tree planting is a great way to share a beautiful weekend morning with Dad," said Mike Puddister, Director of Restoration and Stewardship for CVC. "It's an opportunity for families to step outside, appreciate nature and share a fun and constructive activity together." This event is suitable for all ages and is an opportunity for students to earn community service hours while learn- ing about ecology. No planting experi- ence is needed. CVC staff will provide tree planting demonstrations. Participants should dress for the weather, and wear long pants and stur- dy shoes. Shovels and gloves are pro- vided but extras would be helpful. Light refreshments and snacks will be offered after the tree planting. For more information, contact Lind- sey Jennings, Assistant Program Coordi- nator of Community Outreach for CVC at 905-670-1615 ext. 445 or ljennings@ creditvalleyca.ca. Forget ties and socks this Father's Day and spend a day planting trees with Dad CVC's Dave Beaton, Manager of Community Outreach, planting a tree. The Drumming Circle happens from 1 p.m. until closing-- join in, sing, play your own drum, and hear stories about the original inhabitants of the area. Between noon and 3 p.m., create your paddler for the "Paddle to the Sea" race and then sail a your paddler in a canoe down the river to the fi nish line, from 3:30 p.m. until closing. Paint a turtle or frog to decorate the compost/reuse area-- and decorate a small turtle to take home or to give Dad- dy, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join in the Scavenger Hunt and learn about the critters in the park, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Learn how to make strawberry jam (you know it's dad's favourite) without using a stove.
