Potholes are caused when moisture enters a crack in the granular base be- low the surface asphalt, then freezes and expands during cold periods. The expan- sion puts pressure on the crack, causing the asphalt to break away, resulting in a hole. As vehicles pass over the pothole the sides crumble and its size increases. The Town of Halton Hills encourages all residents to report potholes by calling (905) 873-2601 ext. 2603 to leave a re- quest for service. The Town is advising motorists that pothole repairs are underway and are re- paired based on the same priority system as the Town clears snow. High traffic arte- rial roads will be repaired first, followed by collector roads and finally local resi- dential areas. "The Town of Halton Hills Public Works Department is diligently repairing potholes in roadways as they appear. We are mindful of the disruption these pot- holes can cause and I am confident our crews will address our citizens' concerns promptly and effectively," said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. The Town reminds motorists that the repairs being made are temporary mea- sures only, as the moisture is still in the ground and it is prone to the ongoing freeze/thaw cycle.
