NEW Starting april 3 Jazz vocalist Adi Braun performs church benefit Jazz lovers are in for some afternoon de- light on Sunday, May 4 at St. John's United Church, Georgetown. Vocalist Adi Braun, fresh from venues in Toronto and New York, is performing a benefit concert to help the church raise funds for a major in- terior renovation. Her set will include songs by Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and Shirley Eikhard, and at least one of her own origi- nals. Also performing are jazz pianist Dave Restivo and classical pianist Linda Ippolito on the grand piano. Famed for its music program and out- standing acoustical space, St. John's is changing its sanctuary to reflect a modern approach to worship and performance. Anticipated improvements include an open, wheel-chair accessible platform at the front, new audio-visual and projection technology, flexible seating, and new carpet and lighting. When the work is completed some time this fall, the congregation will be ready to celebrate in style its 175 year history in Georgetown, beginning with a time when circuit riders on horseback trav- elled through ``interminable wilderness`` to preach to wait- ing villagers. The first con- cert for the Creating Inspiring Spaces cam- paign was held in March this year with folk singer/songwriter Katherine Wheatley and the St John's choir, starting the series with a wonderful Spirit filled community event. On Sunday, November 2, organist Chris- topher Dawes will close the series in the newly renovated space. The children's book will be launched on Saturday, May 3 from 2-5 p.m. at 318 Guelph St. in Georgetown. "With the help of Mayor Rick Bonnette all proceeds for this book will be going to the Town in building a wheelchair swing for children and adults who have physical dis- abilities, so that they feel included in their own community parks and recreations," said Absalom. Absalom said she wrote the book based on a trip she took to Sri Lanka. It is the story about a nine-year-old girl named Rosie who is blind, deaf and can't speak. The moral of the story is that even children with a dis- ability can be just a regular kid like every- body else. Sherry Cayea, the illustrator of this book, has brought the images to life of Rosie's daily life in an orphanage. "This book teaches that no matter what disability children have, we should all treat them the same as everyone else and we should not isolate them in our society," said Absalom.
