That's why the Town of Oakville is partnering with local community and sport groups to promote physical literacy in five neighbour- hood parks from May 21 to June 29 as part of the Meet, Move & Play! initiative. Although statistics indi- cate that 76 per cent of Ca- nadian youth participate in organized sports, most youth become inactive out- side of regularly planned activities. The goal of Meet, Move & Play! is to reintro- duce free, unstructured and family-focused educa- tional and physical play at various neighbourhood parks. "We're committed to get- ting residents active this summer," said Nina de Vaal, director of the recre- ation and culture depart- ment. "This new initiative will help kids and their caregivers develop the skills, confidence and love of movement to be physi- cally active for life." Families are encour- aged to participate in free activities for all ages and abilities, including active games with the town's camp team, tai chi with the Oakville Chinese Network, soccer activities with Oak- ville Soccer Club, and the Mobile Playzone with the YMCA of Oakville. The dates and locations are as follows: May 21 to June 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. • Mondays at Jonathan Park, 1180 Jonathan Dr. • Tuesdays at Forster Park, 100 North Forster Park Dr. • Wednesdays at Isaac Park, 3086 Isaac Ave. • Thursdays at Glenash- ton Park, 1051 Glenashton Dr. • Fridays at Old Abbey Park, 1110 Old Abbey Lane ParticipAction's Cana- dian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines indicate that in- creased physical literacy improves children's health, boosts grades in school, builds confidence and self-esteem, develops physical strength, and in- creases happiness. This program is sup- ported by the 2017 Ontario Sport and Recreation Com- munities Fund through the Government of Ontario. Visit oakville.ca for the full event schedule.
