TM Lunch and Learn: Avoiding fraud targeted at seniors Health problems prevented Leslie Mann from attending Oakville Remem- brance Day services for the first time last November, but the Second World War vet- eran, 99 at the time, rallied to experience another big moment in his life. On March 3, Mann was surrounded by family and friends in Toronto to celebrate his 100th birthday. He was charming and humble while celebrating both his recov- ery and his birthday. Dressed for the occasion in a dark suit and tie with his war medals proudly dis- played, Leslie entered the room to a fan- fare of applause and hip, hip hoorays. The room had been decorated to highlight his life with a slide show and various memen- tos. His face lit up when he saw all of the family and friends who came to honour him on his special day. Mann, a Montreal native, was the fourth child of 11. After travelling to the U.K. in his youth, the Second World War broke out and he signed up to serve in the Canadian Army. He spent the duration of the war serv- ing in Europe. In England he was reunited with Jeanne, whom he had known in Cana- da. She eventually became his bride and returned to Canada with him. They raised their family, travelling to British Columbia for work, later settling in Quebec and then to Ontario, where they re- tired in Oakville. Mann, eloquent, poised and full of hu- mour, spoke to the group about his 100 years and how much the day's festivities meant to him.
