Heathcote was put up for adoption as a baby and after several years of searching, they were able to connect a few months ago. Submitted photo After nearly two decades of searching, a Georgetown South woman got to finally meet a sister who was put up for adoption by their mother in Scotland in 1972. Local resident Victoria Guzzo, 35, was born in Toronto and had been told at age 14 that she did have a sibling who shared the same parents, but ultimately a genetic kidney disor- der was what brought them together for the first time at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on July 31. And to completely bridge the gap between them, Guzzo and big sister Claire Heathcote celebrated their mutual birthday of Aug. 7 in each other's company, along with their older sister Samantha, a 47-year-old Brampton resi- dent who was also born in Scotland but had a different father. "I posted on Facebook that for the first time in my life, I woke up and got to wish my sister Happy Birthday and that was pretty special for us after all these years," said Guzzo, whose mother Diane passed away in 1996 from poly- cystic kidney disease. See SISTERS, pg. 3 By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer In 2009, Halton Hills council took on the United States government-- and won-- and this week, they have been asked to do it again. A representative of the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters appeared at Halton Hills council meeting Monday night requesting council pass a resolution opposing the Buy American legislation happening in the U.S. and to kick-start Canadian opposition-- just like they did in 2009. In that year, local company Hayward Gordon appealed to Halton Hills council for help on the issue, saying 30 per cent of his business was in jeopardy by a U.S. infrastructure stimulus package with a requirement that those using the funds must Buy American, specifically using no products with non-U.S. iron and steel. Through Halton Hills lobbying for fair trade and reciprocity-- making headlines around the world-- Canada won an ex- emption to the U.S. legislation. But a second round of Buy American policies has begun, and Canadian compa- nies are worried. "If Buy America 2 is not dealt with, it most likely will be expanded to affect oth- er sectors, as it did before in Buy Ameri- can 1. Vigilance is necessary, hence this letter to you," wrote Carol Hochu, Presi- dent and CEO of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association in a letter to Mayor Rick Bonnette.
