And for Donald McDou- gall, it truly was. "I haven't voted Conser- vative since Diefenbaker," said the 77-year-old retired lawyer, "but I saw a real quality in Effie. This lady and her accomplishments and her CV are very im- pressive." How impressed was McDougall? Consider that he didn't end his 56-year Conservative boycott for his former Dalhousie classmate Joe Clark. He didn't even break it for for- mer Halifax MP George Cooper, the best man in his wedding. McDougall, who moved from Halifax to Burlingtonfrom Halifax to Burlingtonf in March to be closer to his grandkids, initially wasn't going to vote last Thurs- day, figuring the people of Ontario deserved to choose their representa- tives more than someone who had only lived in the province for a few months. But after reading about Triantafilopoulos, the for- mer CEO of Save the Chil- dren Canada, he decided to cast a vote. He was one of the 25,685 who voted for her in the newly-created riding of Oakville North- Burlington, giving Trian- tafilopoulos a margin of victory of more than 12,000 votes over Liberal Alvin Tedjo and NDP candidate Saima Zaidi. "She looks and sounds like someone who wants to help people," McDougall said. Triantafilopoulos said that's what she and the ma- jority Conservative gov- ernment will do. "People genuinely felt that life had become unaf- fordable," she said. "Ifordable," she said. "If talked to a lot of young families with two, three, families with two, three,f four children and theyfour children and theyf were struggling." Triantafilopoulos pointed to gas prices, a big issue in a riding with so many commuters, and hy- dro rates as areas the new government will address. Triantafilopoulos sup- porters cheered and high- fived as the first polls re-fived as the first polls re-f ported, showing her with a two-to-one edge in votes over both the Liberals and the NDP. That remained consistent throughout the night and her two nearest rivals literally split the vote, finishing just seven votes apart. The announcement of a Conservative majority al- so drew a big ovation. "I'm thrilled but not sur- prised," Triantafilopoulos said. "The people of Onta- rio desired a change and change is what we got." Triantafilopoulos said the Conservatives will change the way the gov- ernment operates. She said the party will "listen to the people that are actu- ally on the front line and find ways together to befind ways together to bef able to make a positive in- vestment in health care and education and other areas like that." Former Oakville coun- cillor Sean Weir was happy to see Triantafilopoulos win the riding, where 61.85 per cent of eligible voters turned out. "Effie will do a good job for us," he said. for us," he said. f PROVINCIAL ELECTION Triantafilopoulos scores decisive victory in North Oakville-Burlington First ever Oakville North - Burlington MPP elect Effie Triantafilopoulos poses for a selfie with Alicia Bedford (left) and Cassandra Bosada (right) at her victory celebration at the Burlington Convention Centre.
