A Halton student was one of 51 recipients of the Cana- da's Diabetes Hope Founda- tion (DHF) scholarship this year. Earlier this month, Emily Gorgenyi of Oakville won the award, which propels young people toward post-young people toward post-y secondary education and builds a legacy for the future through alumni mentoring. The program has award- ed more than 650 scholar- ships since its inception 20 years ago and has evolved to include a mentorship ele- ment leveraging the experi- ences of past scholarship re- cipients to help other young adults navigate the complex- ities and challenges of em- barking on post-secondary education while managing Type 1 diabetes. The unique program rec- ognizes that young people living with diabetes must have an unwavering com- mitment to managing their health. Once an adolescent reaches the age of 18, they are transitioning from pediatric care to a more self-directed adult health care program. DHF created its flagship scholarship program to en- courage young adults with type 1/2 diabetes to continue their education and to pro- vide financial and peer-to- peer support to supplement this already financially and emotionally demanding time in their lives as they move into post-secondary education.
