Animal protective services manager Caitlin Jones, who is also an agent with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cru- elty to Animals, said a concerned member of the public directed the humane society to the bridge, which is located near Lakeshore Road West and Willowridge Court. Under the bridge humane society staff found three decapitated chickens and eightfound three decapitated chickens and eightf living ones. Jones said all living birds were safely transported back to the OMHS for examina- tion by the shelter's veterinary technicians. Six of the birds were found to be under- weight and in distress. "All animals, regardless of size or shape, really do matter and owners or custodians must provide for their needs," said Jones. "Under the OSPCA Act chickens fall un- der our legal purview. Regardless of wheth- er the animal is domestic, exotic, a bird or livestock, all animals under this legislation must be kept free from distress and provid- ed adequate shelter, food, water, habitat and medical care. Any unnecessary hardship or neglect may be investigated and could lead to municipal, provincial or federal charg- es." The humane society is reaching out to the public for information concerning where these chickens came from.
