On June 27, 17 volun- teers from the 1st AFC Cub Scouts, Wellspring Bir- mingham Gilgan House and the surrounding neigh- bourhood gathered to plant Oakvillegreen's new But- terfly Wing Garden, which will support biodiversity by providing food and habi- tat to native pollinators. Declining globally due to habitat loss, pesticide use and urban develop- ment, pollinator popula- tions are essential for the reproduction of many dif- ferent plant species in theferent plant species in thef wild, and are also responsi- ble for about one third of our total food production. Thanks to a bursary from Landscape Ontario, from Landscape Ontario,f the Sixth Line garden fea- tures 81 plants, comprised of 16 species of native and near-native wildlflowers and grasses. Sean James (of Sean James Consulting & Design), Cathy Kavassa- lis (Master Gardener), Brenda Van Ryswyk (of Conservation Halton) and Oakvillegreen staff worked together to create the spe- cies list, ensuring they in- cluded a diversity of bloom times, colours and flower types in order to support a wide variety of native polli- nators. In the future, more plants will be added to a second 'wing' of the garden, as well as to the nearby Me- morial Park community garden, to create over 700 square feet of pollinator habitat. The project is part of an ongoing Oakvillegreen ini- tiative to educate and in- spire Oakville residents to take action to support local biodiversity in their own backyards. Oakvillegreen has also created a pollina- tor garden at Glen Abbey Community Centre, and re- cently hosted a workshop series teaching partici- pants how to create 'polli- nator patches' in their own backyards. "We also hope that this garden serves as a demon- stration of the fact that na- tive plant gardens can be both beautiful and func- tional. The goal is to create a space that can be used by students, gardeners, and nearby residents for both enjoyment and education," said Mara McHaffie, Oak- villegreen's Stewardship Co-ordinator. Oakvillegreen is looking for volunteer gar- den stewards who can help with watering and weeding over the summer. To sign up, contact info@oakville- green.org.
