Accreditation Canada announced recently that they would be awarding Halton Healthcare Accred- itation with Exemplary Standing. The news was well re- ceived by Halton Health- care president and CEO Denise Hardenne. "The Accreditation Can- ada survey is one of the most comprehensive exter- nal reviews of health orga- nizations," she said. "It provides our pa- tients, families and the community at large with assurances that we are meeting or exceeding na- tional standards of quality patient care." Four Accreditation Canada surveyors visited Halton Healthcare from May 6-11 and conducted an on-site survey assessing the organization's leader- ship, governance, clinical programs and services against rigorous quality and safety requirements. The surveyors visited all three Halton hospitals - Oakville Trafalgar Memo- rial Hospital, Georgetown Hospital and Milton Dis- trict Hospital - and spoke with many patients, fami- lies, patient and family ad- visers, community part- ners, staff, physicians, vol- unteers and board mem- bers. The group used "tracer" methodology, which pro- vides a real-time experi- ence of how a patient moves through the organi- zation and how services are delivered to them. "We are delighted upon hearing the news of our achievement of Accredita- tion with Exemplary Standing," said Hardenne. "This insightful process gave us the opportunity to put a spotlight on our work and accomplishments in providing our patients with the best care possible within our communities." Hardenne said Accredi- tation Canada's final re- port, received on June 6, confirmed Halton Health- care met 100 per cent of the 28 Required Organization- al Practices, which are es- sential practices an organi- zation must have in place to enhance patient safety. She said the organiza- tion also met 99.7 per cent of the high priority criteria that contribute to safe, high quality care and are used to measure organiza- tional compliance with Ac- creditation Canada's Qmentum standards. "We are honoured to re- ceive the highest level of achievement possible un- der the Accreditation Can- ada Qmentum Program," said John Nyholt, Chair of the Halton Healthcare board of directors. "The report speaks vol- umes about the quality care that we are providing within our communities." The report also com- mended Halton Healthcare for the integration of vol- unteer patient and family advisers and noted that these individuals indicated to surveyors that they felt valued, listened to and that their input was respected and acted upon.
