In a recent report on af- fordable housing in thefordable housing in thef region, social and com- munity services staff out- lined the use for a $1.2 mil- lion grant from the Green Ontario Fund, which is to be allocated for upgrades in social housing build- ings in Halton. The funds will replace boilers in the March of Dimes building in Oak- ville and the Stoa Co-Op in Burlington, as well as at 513 Walkers Line in Burlington. The money will also fa- cilitate lighting upgrades, chiller replacements and maintenance to air make units in other social hous- ing facilities. Regional Coun. Jane Fogal asked staff for reas- surance that these up- grades in fact reduce the region's carbon footprint. "Can you reassure me of that?" she said. "We have a fairly aged infrastructure," said Alex Sarchuk, commissioner of social and community services. "These have been impactful capital im- provements." When asked how Doug Ford's announcement of cancelling the Green On- tario program would af- fect the current grant, fect the current grant,f staff said they had a high degree of confidence that it would be received. However, going for- ward, it appears that this is the last time the region will be able to receive money from the program. "We'll have to find oth- er forms of funding, which puts a stain on the system," said a regional councillor, asking if it would be wise to add an amendment to advocate for further funding of thisfor further funding of thisf sort. "As the chair of social services I would recom- mend a less hasty ap- proach to this," said An- drew Balahura. Premier-elect Doug Ford quietly closed the program and its website on June 19.
