Because ... questions: Questions from her mom, who'sQuestions from her mom, who'sQ glued to her side during every ep- isode, and texts from her dad, who lives up north. They're prod- ding her for the outcome of course, which she must keep se- cret. Larsen, 25, an Oakville native, and Mar Lyon, 26, both former Toronto Argonaut cheerleaders, are one of 10 teams of two taking part in this sixth season of the popular show, which is CTV's first-ever "Heroes Edition."first-ever "Heroes Edition."f Larsen and Lyon, certainly meet the hero criteria due to their combined seven years as Argos cheerleaders they were part of Huddle Up, a bullying pre- vention program they take into the community. The Amazing Race is three ep- isodes into the season, and Lar- sen was particularly thrilled that she was able to watch epi- sode one with her family by her side at a Toronto restaurant. Even more exciting was that the pair won that particular race; for that they received a trip for two to Tokyo, Japan. In it, they were racing around British Columbia, including stops at Hatley Gardens, Squam- ish and Britannia Beach. In the first roadblock of the race, one team member had to ride a zip line to a net suspended high above the Mamquam Val- ley. With a bungee cord, they had to jump from the net to grab a plush beaver toy and exchange it for their next clue. If theyfor their next clue. If theyf missed, they had to wait at the back of the line to try again. In episode two, it was off to Dawson City, Yukon - the far- thest north The Amazing Race has ever gone. Larsen said it was a "cute lit- tle mining town, with a lot of character - small but mighty." The T. A. Blakelock High School graduate said she met Ly- on at work in Toronto at Cotton Candy Events, which operates samplings and promotions with- in the city. Lyon had been a cheerleader for the Argos and recruited Lar-for the Argos and recruited Lar-f sen, who cheered throughout high school and then on Oak- ville's CheerForce AllStars. Larsen, who graduated from Sheridan College's visual mer- chandizing and arts program, said it's been tough not spilling the beans on the outcome, but she said it's been great to relive her experiences on television. "It's so amazing to be able to relive it, to see it on television and to see how it all comes to- gether," she said, noting that filming took place from April tofilming took place from April tof mid-May. "You only know your race, you don't know what the other teams are going through." "Mar and I won the first leg of the race, and to see us win was amazing," she added, noting that it's also beautiful considering all the places the race took them too. She said that people won- dered if the pair would remain friends following the show, butfriends following the show, butf Larsen said they are closer than ever. She said one of the things she liked most about the opportunity was that there was no connec- tion to the outside world. "There was no television, no cellphones, and it was basically shutting down from our busy, chaotic lives," she said. "To get through this race and to be able to shut down, you learn a lot about yourself and your team- mate." "You are literally with that person 24/7 and it's nice to get to know someone on that level. We are closer now than ever." She encouraged people to watch the show because the teams are "phenomenal." "It was an honour to be con- sidered a hero beside some of Canada's best - some in the Armed Forces, police officers and the Navy," she said. "It's nice to be considered a hero." Up for grabs is $250,000, a once-in-a-lifetime trip for two around the world and a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse Redline for each. Of course, Larsen can't di- vulge whether or not they won; following the second episode, following the second episode,f which aired on July 19, the pair sits in fourth spot.
