MuSical inStruMEntS MuSic lESSonS Nearly 1,200 area resi- dents got up close and per- sonal with a piece of Cana- dian history last week. Huge crowds were on hand at Oakville's Lake- side Park to tour the HMCS Oriole. This was part of a tour intended to provide Canadians with an opportunity to visit Royal Canadian Navy ships and speak with crew members in ports on the Great Lakes. Oriole was built pri- marily for racing in 1921, but sold to the Navy League in 1941 to provide a training platform for sail- ors during the war. It was commissioned in- to the RCN in 1952. She has continued to serve as a training vessel and those who sail in her much better understand the elements and the ba- sics of seamanship. The core RCN crew is augmented with sea cadets and trainees to make 21 sailors on deck as required to manhandle the tremen- dous sails without the as- sistance of winches as fit- ted on modern sailboats. HISTORIC NAVAL SHIP VISITS OAKVILLE The HMCS Oriole departs Oakville in the company o the classic gaff rigged schooner Anitra, which has been sailing out of Oakville harbour for 92 years.
