MOTIVATIONALLY SPEAKING Graham Paine/Metroland COMMUNITY Former CFL linebacker Orlando Bowen was the keynote speaker at the recent Halton Youth General Meeting, hosted by the YMCA of Oakville at the Sheridan Conference Centre, where Bowen was invited to share his powerful story. About 10 years ago, Bowen thought he was about to die. Pinned to the ground and enduring a savage beating, he had been jumped by two plainclothes police officers - an injustice he says was the first of many laid against him at the hands of police. Later exonerated of any wrongdoing, Bowen publicly forgave those who did him wrong and has since made it his goal to inspire others to pursue excellence in all that they do. Founder and executive director of One Voice One Team Youth Leadership, Bowen empowers youth to better themselves and their community through leadership skills. Bowen, a motivational speaker, is a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient, the 2014 Harry Jerome Award winner for community service, recipient of a 2012 African Canadian Achievement Award and one of the 2012 Diverse-City Fellows.
