Part of a Canadian con- tingent of players from the GTHL 2006/2007, the boys were part of the Dream '06 team, coached and managed by GTHL's Mike Zentena and Hua Wei, respectively. Prior to departing for China, the foursome played in two tournaments that helped foster a bond among players. The players imme- diately gelled on and off the ice, earning success in the tournament matches and forging friendships alongforging friendships alongf the way. Upon arrival in Beijing, the four Rangers faced some obstacles. These included the 45-degree weather, ex- treme humidity and 12-hour time change. They over- came these challenges, quickly adapting to their en- vironment, and were ready to compete. The boys enjoyed a cul- tural experience of a life- time, which included taking in the sights of the Great Wall of China, TiananmenWall of China, TiananmenW Square and The Forbidden City. They sampled authen- tic Chinese cuisine like Pe- king duck and Szechuan frog. Defenceman Melvillefrog. Defenceman Melvillef even ate a grilled maggot on a stick - and lived to tell the tale. The four Oakville youth lived like locals; they trav- elled on the subway, walked to the supermarket and picked up on the language. The Dream '06 team played in the U12 division, coming out strong as the dominant squad in their loop. They faced teams from Indonesia, China, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and skated their way to the semifinal match. They defeated Team USA and moved on to face Hong Kong in the finals, where their winning streak came to an end. The local players and their teammates earned a second-place overall finish in the invitational contest, bringing home silver med- als from their international tournament play.
