The positive test in Oak- ville came from mosquitoes trapped the week of July 29. Urban areas are more likely to have mosquitoes that carry WNV. The types of mosquitoes that transmit WNV to humans most com- monly breed in urban areas in places that hold water such as bird baths, plant pots, old toys and tires. Halton Region is dedicat- ed to reducing West Nile through education and pre- ventative programs such as larviciding. "Until the hard frosts of fall set in, Halton residentsfall set in, Halton residentsf should continue to protect themselves against mosqui- to bites and remove mosqui- to breeding sites," said Dr. Daniela Kempkens, Halton Region acting medical offi-Region acting medical offi-R cer of health. The following are steps that residents can take to protect themselves and their families from mosqui- toes: . Cover up. Wear light- coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants with tight- ly-woven fabric. . Avoid being outdoors from early evening to morn-from early evening to morn-f ing when mosquitoes are most active and likely to bite, as well as at any time in shady, wooded areas. . Reduce mosquito breed- ing sites around the home by getting rid of all water- filled containers and ob-filled containers and ob-f jects, where possible. Change the water in bird baths at least once a week. . Use an approved insect repellent, such as one con- taining DEET or Icaridin. . Make sure window and door screens are tight and without holes, cuts or other openings. Although West Nile can be serious, most people who are infected (70-80 per cent) experience no symptoms. Mild symptoms include fe- ver, headache, body aches, mild rash and swollen lymph glands. In fewer than one per cent of West Nile-in- fected patients, severefected patients, severef symptoms can develop. Adults 50 and over, and those with weaker immune systems, are at higher risks.
