Halton Regional Police were called to the building at 100 Lakeshore Rd. E. at 6:53 p.m. to assist the Oakville Fire Department with reports of a coolant leak. The building, at the corner of Lake- shore Road East and Navy Street, was the scene of an ethylene glycol leak on the third floor. Police say three residents suffered ex- posure resulting in minor skin irritation from the liquid leak and were treated by Halton paramedics at the scene. Due to the leak, residents of nine units on the third floor were moved out over- night to allow for repairs and cleaning. Halton police assisted at the scene with building containment and traffic manage- ment. It was not clear how the leak oc- curred. The Town of Oakville provided a bus to shelter the affected residents from the heat. Ethylene glycol is a colourless, odour- less, viscous dihydroxy alcohol. It has a sweet taste, but is poisonous if ingested. Ethylene glycol is the most important gly- col commercially available and is manu- factured on a large scale in the United States. It is used as an antifreeze and cool- ant, in hydraulic fluids.
