The school year is upon us once more (how did that happen so fast?), and for many Halton families, there's lots to get organized. Here's some of the details you need to stay on top of things as your family gets into the back-to-school groove. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: Tuesday, Sept. 4. Both the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board return to school the same day. For a list of other important dates in the school year, see the calendar page on each board's website.Public: hdsb.caCatholic: hcdsb.org TAKING THE SCHOOL BUS: Students from both boards are transported to school by Halton Student Transportation Services. To find your child's bus schedule, use your child's nine-digit Ontario Education Number (OEN) to look up their schedule at haltonbus.ca. The site also posts updates when there are delays or weather-related cancellations. If you don't have an OEN for your child, but they are eligible to take the bus, expect to receive their schedule in the mail by the end of August. IMMUNIZATION: Ontario law requires students in primary and secondary to be vaccinated against the following diseases unless they have received an exemption on religious or conscience grounds:DiphtheriaTetanusPolioMeaslesMumpsRubellaMeningococcal DiseasePertussis (whooping cough)Varicella (chickenpox) - for children born in 2010 or laterParents and guardians are responsible for keeping their child's records up to date with the Halton Region Health Department. Visit halton.ca/immunize, call 311 or call 905-825-6000 for more information. DRIVING IN SCHOOL ZONES: When driving near schools, don't forget that speed limits tend to be lower and there can be unexpected foot traffic on the road. CAA Southern Ontario offers the following tips for drivers to keep school zones safe:Avoid double parking or stopping on crosswalks; which can block pedestrians' visibility;Don't stop on the opposite side of the street, requiring children to cross through traffic;Avoid stopping in moving traffic, requiring children to rush out; andDon't drive up along- side or block a school bus to keep children from missing it. A HANDY GUIDE TO HELP YOUR FAMILY GET ORGANIZED There's lots to think about when it comes to getting ready for back-to-school.
