The funding, Oliver said, helped create 374 jobs in the Oakville riding for 126 employers and pro-for 126 employers and pro-f vided work experience to summer students, while also supporting small businesses and organiza- tions. The CSJ program pro- vides wage subsidies to employers to create sum- mer positions for second- ary and post-secondary students. It offers this funding to not-for-profit organiza- tions, like Kerr Street Mis- sion, public sector em- ployers and small busi- nesses. "Our government is committed to supporting youth employment across Canada. The Canada Sum- mer Jobs program is a sig- nificant step in helping you, young students, find job opportunities," said Oliver. "Employing youth in our community benefits everybody. Students are contributing in a real and meaningful way to the or- ganizations that hire them, and in return, stu- dents get quite relevant work experience and earn some money that's going to help you with your post- secondary education." Oliver said the federal government doubled the number of summer jobs created by the program, from more than 34,000 infrom more than 34,000 inf 2015, to nearly 70,000 in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Despite this, Oliver said, the funds available are still not able to keep up with the demand. In the Oakville riding alone, he said, the request- ed funds totalled more than $4 million, with only just over $1 million avail- able. Oliver said he was struck by the number of students unable to find summer employment and whom he found stuck at home as he knocked on doors prior to the 2015 fed- eral election. He said his own chil- dren had similar difficul- ties finding summer work as they attended universi- ty. Oliver said this is a dif- ficult situation for youngficult situation for youngf people because not only can they not make money for school, but they can'tfor school, but they can'tf contribute and use their skills, no matter how 374 SUMMER JOBS CREATED IN OAKVILLE RIDING THROUGH CANADA SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM MP John Oliver speaks with students who worked at Visit Oakville this summer during the Canada Summer Jobs celebration at Kerr Street Mission.
