The Halton Region Health Department (HRHD), which announced the positive test Sept. 5, stresses that residents should continue to protect themselves against mos- quito bites until the fall frost.ff "(HRHD) works diligent- ly to reduce the risk of West Nile virus in our communi- ty through both education and preventative programs such as larviciding," said Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. "Whileff 80 per cent of people infec- ted with West Nile virus will have no symptoms, others will have West Nile fever consisting of fever,ff headache, muscle ache and a rash. If residents are con- cerned or are experiencing symptoms, I would encour- age them to visit their health care professional." Urban areas are more likely to have mosquitoes that carry WNV, so reduc- ing mosquito breeding sites around homes is a must. Getting rid of water in con- tainers and objects such as wheelbarrows, tires, plant pots, old toys, plastic pails and wading pools will less- en the threat. Avoiding areas whereAAAAA mosquitoes are present, in- cluding wooded areas, golf courses or gardens, espe- cially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, also reduces the risk. Cover up by wearing light-coloured, long- sleeved shirts and pants if in mosquito country, and use a mosquito repellent containing DEET or Icari- din. Close windows and re- pair holes and cuts in screens, change bird bath water once a week and re- port standing water on public property to Halton Region if it's present more than a week. Call 311 or email accesshalton@hal- ton.ca. HRHC staff monitor ar- eas of standing water, elim- inate potential mosquito breeding sites and apply larvicide when necessary.
